Description
While a member of the Miles Davis quintet, the tenor saxophonist John Coltrane made a series of solo studio recordings for Prestige in 1957 and 1958. This one constituted a major step forward in his career and includes a dense, harmonically complex trio of compositions: 'Black Pearls', a speedy version of 'Lover Come Back to Me' and the equally propulsive blues jam 'Sweet Sapphire Blues'. The recording captures Coltrane at the height of perfecting the intense volley that would garner the name'‘sheets of sound', and features sterling accompaniment by Red Garland on piano and Donald Byrd's crackling trumpet.
