Description
These nocturnes by Lauridsen are a further exploration of the American composer’s passionate devotion to poetry. He uses words by Graves, Rilke and Neruda and throws in some non-secular psalms and a Latin motet, 'Ave, dulcissima Maria'. This last is a piece of great tranquility scored for male chorus, with a set of finger cymbals played by Lauridsen himself (he plays piano elsewhere on the CD). The group Polyphony performs all these works with impeccable pitch and diction; the poems by Rilke about roses are particularly handsome.
. . . elevated by the heavenly work of all concerned with its making, and the compelling eloquence of Lauridsen's sublime music. Classic FM Magazine
