Description

Whether she is wife, lover or mother, the image of a woman mourning the loss of her loved one is a recurring theme of Baroque music. One of the most celebrated of all these laments, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, is framed here by three more masterpieces of the pianto genre in a similar spirit of bittersweet sadness: Pergolesi's Salve Regina; Antonio Vivaldi’s Al Santo Sepolcro; and Pietro Locatelli's Il Pianto d'Arianna, all of them finely done. Prohaska's bright-to-the-point-of-glaring soprano contrasts well with Fink's dark alto in the solos.
